ANGOL   From Fuorigrotta To Captain Of The National Team   Fabio Cannavaro was born in Naples on the 13th of September 1973. He’s the second of three children (the firstborn Renata and Paolo are his sister and brother). He started to play football straight away and at eight years of age, after "wearing out" shoes and balls on the soil pitches of Fuorigrotta, he enters the Italsider of Bagnoli. At eleven years of age he joins Napoli and soon after wins his first important trophy, the Campionato Allievi of 1987. It’s the golden period of the club: Napoli are the newly crowned Italian champions for the first time ever in its history, an entire city which dreams with Diego Diego Armando Maradona and Fabio, a ball boy at the “San Paolo”, can admire his idol closely. Apart from the “Pibe de Oro” in that Napoli of wonders there’s also his defensive model, Ciro Ferrara, from whom Fabio learns everything, including the sliding tackles… Once, with the Primavera shirt, the young defender does a sliding tackle on the great Maradona. A Napoli director reprimands him immediately, but the same number 10 takes the defence of the Azzurri’s hot prospect: “Good, you’re doing well,” and the blessing of the Argentinean champion When on the 7th of March 1993 (Juventus-Napoli) Fabio debuted with the first team, Maradona is already away and Napoli turns to the young jewel. The results are not exciting and the team is fighting for relegation, but just at 20 years of age, Cannavaro already enchants, highlighting his great explosive qualities which will make him the quickest and most incisive defender of Serie A. The Naples adventure lasts up till the summer of 1995, when Fabio moves to Parma, where with Gigi Buffon and Lilian Thuram, he makes part of one of the most admired and envied defences by Presidents, coaches and fans all over the world. With this rearguard, the Emiliani’s formation win the Coppa Italia, Uefa Cup, Italian Supercup and arrive a step away from the Scudetto in the year of Juan Sebastian Veron and Enrico Chiesa, respectively directing and finishing the Ducali's game. In the 2001/2002 season, with the departures of Thuram and Buffon towards Juventus, Parma gives to Fabio the captain's armband. The Naples defender is the absolute leader of the Gialloblu and that year he wears an important band, called upon to hold the weight of a difficult season, always between the safety and relegation zone. In the end arrives the great joy of the Coppa Italia: after a well-fought match against Juventus (with Fabio spectator for an absurd suspension received in the semi-final against Brescia), the Ducali’s formation lifts to the sky its third Coppa Italia in its history, the second in the Cannavaro era. After seven years spent at Parma, in the summer of 2002, the new Italian national team captain takes a new adventure in Milan with the Nerazzurri: for Massimo Moratti’s Inter, without Ronaldo, Cannavaro is a new leader along with “Bobo” Vieri Napoli, Parma and Inter, but also a lot of Azzurro in his career. Two European titles (1994 and 1996) won with the shirt of the Under 21 coached by Cesare Maldini, then the debut with the National team (22nd January 1997, Italy-Northern Ireland 2-0), two World Cups (1998 and 2002) and European Championship (2000) up till the grades of captain. Once the unlucky World Cup of Japan and Korea was archived, Paolo Maldini left the Azzurri and the captain’s armband was handed to Fabio. For Italy the Cannavaro era as captain started, with the qualification to the Portuguese European Championships. Following the experience in Portugal, at the end of the transfer market, Cannavaro went to Turin to join the Bianconeri. His friend Ciro Ferrara was there to welcome him along with other champions. The captain of the Italian national team now wore the shirt of the team which won most league titles in Italy: the umpteenth adventure in his shining career. On the pitch it’s one success after another. Fabio became the key player in the Bianconeri’s defence and led Juventus to two Scudetti. On the bench, in Turin as well as today in Madrid, there was Fabio Capello, and between the two of them the understanding between the two is good. In the 2004/05 season Fabio does not lose a match: plays 38 matches and also scores two goals. The ailments in Milan are definitely over. In the 2005/06 season Juventus had the duty to re-confirm itself and does so in the best possible way: another Scudetto with Fabio always a key member. On the pitch Juventus deserves the title, but in summer of 2006 the scandal of Calciopoli hits the Bianconeri’s club which is forced to rebuild from scratch its staff and re-start from Serie B. However, Fabio follows these stories from a distance, even though he’s quite hit. He’s with the Azzurri of Marcello Lippi for the World Cup in Germany. Italy does not impress in the first matches of the group stage, then it’s a march towards the final: Australia, Ukraine, Germany and France must kneel down in front of the Azzurri. Fabio Cannavaro, captain, raises the World Cup in the sky, which is the fourth one that Italy won. The rest is today's story. Fabio Cannavaro follows Fabio Capello at Madrid. “Real Madrid,” he explained during a press conference, “Is the team in which every footballer would like to play at least once in his life. At this point of my career this was probably my last chance, I could not refuse..." Impossible to say no to the Galacticos!

Da Fuorigrotta a capitano della Nazionale

Fabio Cannavaro nasce a Napoli il 13 settembre 1973. Secondo di tre figli (la primogenita Renata e Paolo sono i fratelli), inizia subito a giocare a calcio e a otto anni, dopo avere "consumato" scarpe e palloni sui campetti in terra di Fuorigrotta, entra nell'Italsider di Bagnoli. A undici anni approda al Napoli e ben presto vince il primo trofeo importante, il Campionato Allievi nel 1987. E' il periodo d'oro della Societa' partenopea: e' il Napoli fresco Campione d'Italia per la prima volta nella sua storia, un'intera citta' che sogna con Diego Armando Maradona e Fabio, raccattapalle al "San Paolo", puo' ammirare il suo idolo da vicino. Oltre al "Pibe de Oro" in quel Napoli delle meraviglie

gioca pure il suo modello di difensore, Ciro Ferrara, dal quale Fabio apprende tutto, intervento in scivolata compreso... Una volta, con la maglia della Primavera, il giovane difensore interviene cosi' sul grande Maradona. Un dirigente napoletano lo rimprovera immediatamente, ma a prendere le difese della promessa azzurra e' lo stesso numero 10: "Bravo, va bene cosi'", e' la benedizione del campione argentino.

Quando il 7 marzo 1993 (Juventus-Napoli 4-3) Fabio esordisce in prima squadra, Maradona e' gia' lontano e il Napoli si stringe subito attorno al gioiello del vivaio. I risultati non sono entusiasmanti e la squadra lotta per la salvezza, ma appena ventenne Cannavaro gia' incanta, mettendo in luce le grandi doti esplosive che ne faranno il difensore piu' rapido e incisivo della serie A.

L'avventura partenopea dura fino all'estate del 1995, quando Fabio si trasferisce a Parma, dove con Gigi Buffon e Lilian Thuram va a comporre una delle difese piu' ammirate e invidiate da presidenti, allenatori e tifosi di tutto il mondo. Con questa retroguardia la formazione emiliana vince Coppa Italia, Coppa Uefa, Supercoppa Italiana e arriva a un passo dallo scudetto nell'anno di Juan Sebastian Veron ed Enrico Chiesa, rispettivamente a dirigere e finalizzare il gioco ducale. Nella stagione 2001/2002, con le partenze di Thuram e Buffon destinazione Juventus, il Parma consegna a Fabio la fascia di capitano. Il difensore napoletano e' leader assoluto dei gialloblu' e quell'anno indossa una fascia importante, chiamata a reggere il peso di una stagione difficile, sempre in bilico fra la salvezza e la zona retrocessione. Alla fine arriva pero' la grande gioia della Coppa Italia: dopo una finale combattuta con la Juventus (con Fabio spettatore per una assurda squalifica rimediata nella semifinale con il Brescia), la formazione ducale alza al cielo la terza Coppa Italia della propria storia, la seconda dell'era Cannavaro.

Dopo sette anni trascorsi a Parma, nell'estate del 2002 il neo capitano della Nazionale intraprende una nuova avventura a Milano, sponda nerazzurra: per l'Inter di Massimo Moratti, orfana di Ronaldo, un leader in piu' da affiancare a "Bobo" Vieri.

Napoli, Parma e Inter, ma anche tanto azzurro nella carriera di Fabio Cannavaro. Due titoli europei (1994 e 1996) vinti con la maglia dell'Under 21 allenata da Cesare Maldini, poi l'esordio in Nazionale maggiore (22 gennaio 1997, Italia-Irlanda del Nord 2-0), due Campionati del Mondo (1998 e 2002) e un Europeo (2000) fino ai gradi di capitano. Archiviati gli sfortunati Mondiali in Giappone e Corea, infatti, Paolo Maldini da' l'addio all'azzurro e la fascia viene consegnata a Fabio. Per l'Italia si apre l'era di Cannavaro capitano, bagnata dalla qualificazione agli Europei lusitani.

Dopo l'esperienza in Portogallo, in chiusura di calciomercato il passaggio a Torino sponda bianconera. Ad attendere Fabio alla Juventus, l'amico Ciro Ferrara e tanti altri campioni. Per il capitano della Nazionale italiana, la maglia della squadra piu' titolata del nostro calcio: l'ennesima avventura di una carriera luminosa.

Sul campo è un successo dopo l’altro. Fabio diventa protagonista assoluto della difesa bianconera e trascina la Juventus a due scudetti. Sulla panchina, anche a Torino come oggi a Madrid, c’è Fabio Capello e fra i due l’intesa è quella giusta. Nella stagione 2004/05 Fabio non perde una partita: incassa 38 presenze e segna anche due gol. Gli acciacchi di Milano sono definitivamente alle spalle.

Nella stagione 2005/06 la Juventus ha il compito di confermarsi e lo fa alla grande: ancora uno scudetto con Fabio sempre protagonista.

Sul campo la Juventus merita, ma nell’estate del 2006 lo scandalo calciopoli colpisce nel profondo il club bianconero che è costretto a rifondare il proprio staff dirigenziale e ripartire dalla serie B.

Fabio però segue da lontano, anche se ne è profondamente colpito, queste vicende. Lui è in azzurro con Marcello Lippi per la Coppa del Mondo di Germania. L’Italia balbetta nelle prime partite del girone eliminatorio (con Ghana, Usa e Repubblica Ceca), poi è una cavalcata verso la finale: Ucraina, Australia, Germania e Francia si devono inchinare alla forza della nazionale azzurra. Fabio Cannavaro, capitano, alza al cielo la quarta coppa del mondo che finisce nelle mani dell’Italia.

Poi è storia di oggi. Fabio Cannavaro segue Fabio Capello a Madrid. “Il Real Madrid –spiega in conferenza stampa- è la squadra dove tutti i calciatori vorrebbero giocare almeno una volta nella vita. A questo punto della mia carriera era probabilmente l’ultima occasione che mi si presentava. Non potevo rifiutare…” Impossibile dire no ai Galacticos!

Il finale del 2006 per Fabio è da incorniciare, in novembre vince il Pallone d'Oro a Parigi (votato dai giornalisti) e in dicembre viene incoronato a Zurigo con il Fifa World Player (votato da allenatori e capitani delle nazionali di tutto il mondo).
